About The Competition

The competition for 2020 is now over, watch this space for details on the 2021 competiton to be announced later in the year !

Restaurant Managers all over the UK are invited to compete in this prestigious competition to become the UK Restaurant Manager of the Year.

The competition has been run by the Academy of Food & Wine Service for many years and aims to acknowledge and reward the best in the industry – whether small individual boutique establishments, popular fine-dining sites or those part of a larger food and beverage operation.

Anyone who fulfils the role of a Restaurant Manager is welcome to enter. Your job title doesn’t have to be “Restaurant Manager” but you should be undertaking the typical work and activities associated with the role: responsibility for the business performance and coordinating the entire operation of the restaurant.

How does the competition work?

First Round

The first round questions must be answered on the Entry Form by Monday 21st October 2019. The answers will be judged by the panel of judges made-up from representatives of the Academy of Food & Wine Service, sponsors and industry experts.

Shortlisting will happen on 4 November 2019.

The best candidates will be selected and invited to compete in the Semi-Finals and Live Final on 6th January 2020 at The Savoy, London.


During the morning session candidates will be interviewed by industry professionals and tested on their Restaurant Management technical skills.  The top four candidates will then be asked to participate in a Restaurant Management Skills scenario in front of a VIP audience. (All candidates will be involved to a degree in this even if they are not a finalist.)

Awards Ceremony

The winner will be announced and presented with their award at the UK Restaurant Manager of the Year  Winner’s Reception on 6th January 2020, in front of a highly influential and inspirational audience at a drinks and canape awards reception at The Savoy, London.

The Academy of Food & Wine Service, UK Restaurant Manager of the Year 2020 will receive: A trophy, certificate and prestigious career advancing training as well as invitations from The AFWS to Top Industry events.

All finalists will be given the opportunity to be mentored throughout the year post-event by leading industry figures.
